Ellinwood baseball loses heartbreaker

ELLINWOOD – Ellinwood’s baseball team was one out away from a historic three-game winning streak. But Pratt Skyline erased a 2-run deficit with a 3-run seventh inning for a 5-4 comeback victory. Skyline completed the sweep with a 11- victory.

Ellinwood (2-2) won an opening doubleheader against Ell-Saline. The Eagles travel to Ellsworth April 11.

SKYLINE 5, EAGLES 4 (G1) – Skyline’s Brayden Berens doubled home Justus Notovny and Leo Egging with the tying and game-winning runs off relief pitcher Bryan Jaske. Two seventh-inning walks and an errant pickoff throw at first base cost the Eagles. Notovny singled and Leo Egging walked with two out to set up Berens’ game-winner.

Jaske’s second-inning single scored Parker Scheck. Dylan Gantz scored on a third-inning passed ball. Alek Brack scored on a fourth-inning double play groundball.

Skyline’s Cohen Flanders scored on a fifth-inning steal. Gage Egging scored on Grif Wallace’s sixth-inning double for a 3-2 score. Jaske scored on a sixth-inning passed ball for a 4-2 lead. Ellinwood starter Gantz struck out seven batters in 41/3 innings.

SKYLINE 11, EAGLES 1 (G2) – Skyline roughed up Ellinwood pitchers Scheck and Cooper Hosman for 11 earned runs. Notovny drove home three runs with four consecutive hits. Flanders drove in two runs. Grayson Hoener, Berens and Grif Wallace drove home runs.

Ellinwood’s Brack scored on Chase Gibson’s second-inning single.
