MULVANE – The Great Bend Bat Cats spun a pair of shutouts with 23 strikeouts to dominate the Mulvane Patriots 8-0 and 11-0 in Sunday's Sunflower Collegiate League baseball doubleheader.
The Bat Cats (10-1, 6-0) occupy first place in the Sunflower Collegiate League. Great Bend plays 316 Elite in Tuesday's 6 p.m. twin bill at Al Burns Memorial Field.
BAT CATS 8, MULVANE 0 (G1) – Bat Cats pitcher Dash Albus (2-0) struck out seven batters and reliever George Austin struck out four batters in two innings in a 2-hit shutout.
Red-hot Simon Larranaga from Temple College (Texas) kept rolling with a pair of 2-run hits to spark the Bats Cats past Mulvane 8-0.
Alex Rodgers doubled and scored on a Kyle Gates first-inning groundout for a 1-0 lead. Larranaga delivered a 2-run double to score Rodgers and Gates after back-to-back singles in the third inning. Larranaga scored on a Adam Mustow sacrifice fly.
Gates kept pace with a 2-run single to score Brady Kreutzer and Matthew Howell after a single and a walk in the fourth inning. Larranaga capped another big night with a 2-run seventh inning hit.
The Bat Cats' trio of Rodgers, Gates and Larranaga dominated with 6-for-11 batting with seven RBIs and six runs scored.
BAT CATS 11, MULVANE 0 (G2) – Starter David Stuart (2-0) struck out 10 batters and Cade McWilliams fanned two hitters in a 4-hit shutout to sweep the doubleheader.
Colby Christian from Temple College (Texas) drilled a pair of 2-run homers.
Rodgers singled, stole two bases and scored on a first-inning error. Christian's 2-run fourth-inning homer drove home Larranaga. Larranaga doubled home Hunter Gotreaux and Christian followed with a 2-run fifth-inning homer.
Gotreaux doubled in Brady Kreutzer and Gotreaux scored on a Bodi Wallar groundout. Conner Allen and Larranaga scored on errors and Rodgers scored on a passed ball in the 5-run sixth inning.
