GBMS 7th graders win two games

The Great Bend Middle School 7th graders (2-0) survived a nail-biter 12-6 football victory over Dodge City Middle School.

When Cooper Ohmacht returned the opening kickoff for a 70-yard touchdown, the Panthers were pumped. Ohmacht scored on a third-quarter quarterback Keeper around the edge for a 12-0 score. Dodge City marched down the field for a touchown to climb within 12-6.

But the Panthers put together a seven-minute drive to run out the clock out to improve to 2-0. Kale Kern led the defense with 12 tackles. Corbryn Hollinde played great on both sides on the ball recording 10 tackles while catching several passes. Jaxon Wondra had four receptions for 40 yards.

“We found a way to get the W,” said GBMS coach Matt Barton. “I’m proud of our guys for showing that much fight against a good team on a brutally hot afternoon.

GBMS 38, GC KEN HENDERSON 0 — Coach Matt Barton led his GBMS 7th grade football team to a 38-0 win over Garden City Ken Henderson.

Ohnmacht ran for an opening touchdown and added the two-point conversion. Kale Kern scored two touchdowns and Korbyn Holinde added a touchdown. Jesus Torres returned an intercepted for a touchdown. Kern and Holinde each added two point conversions. GBMS held Garden City to three completions.

“I’m pleased with how hard we played,” coach Barton said. “It was a great week one victory. We plan to keep getting better.”
