GBMS girls sweep season opener
The Great Bend Middle School girls 8th grade basketball A-team began their season in style handing Dodge City Comanche a 41-7 loss.
Aggressive pressing by the Panthers led to a 17-1 lead. Great Bend ouscored Dodge City 10-0 in the second quarter.
“The girls embraced the idea of getting into a press early and took control of the game,” said coach Kyle Jeffrey. “The girls exceeded my expectations, based upon how little time we’ve actually worked.”
The Panthers outscored Comanche 14-6 after halftime.
Alyssa McCauley scored nine points. Aliya Johnson, Kimberly Hofflinger and Katherine Mazouch added eight apiece. Other scorers were Tatum Anderson (4); Denver Ringo (2) and Miya Nachtigal (2.)
GBMS B TEAM — The GBMS B team rallied for a 22-9 victory after trailing 8-4 after one quarter. Ellie Newman closed the gap to 8-6 at halfime. Natalee Daniels keyed a big fourth-quarter with four baskets for a 22-9 win.
Daniels scored 10 points followed by Ellie Newman (4), Ryann Stryker (2), Reese Bullard (2), Alejandra Castruita (2) and Jeriah McFarland (2).
“The girls worked hard on defense keeping the ball out of the perimeter,” said coach Melissa Swanson. “We need to be patient and work for the open shot.”
