DODGE CITY – After dropping a last-minute loss against Salina Lakewood, the Great Bend Middle School girls 7th-grade A-team coach Tera Arnberger spent the week fine tuning her team and it showed against Dodge City Middle School with a 26-18 victory.
Spreading out the scoring the first quarter between Katherine Mazouch, Miya Nachtigal and Aliya Johnson the Panthers were able to end the first quarter with an 8-4 lead. Dodge City’s Emmy Kirk scored eight points for the Demons but GBMS continued to spread the offense with Johnson, Tatum Anderson and Denver Ringo adding two apiece.
Great Bend’s defense held Kirk to two in the third quarter while Anderson scored six and Mazouch and Nachtigal each added two points. Natalee Daniels added two Panther points for a 26-18 win to improve to a 2-1 record.
Ringo grabbed eight rebounds with Nachtigal and Anderson each grabbed five boards.
“Our girls have improved every day,” said coach Arnberger. “We’ve been working on our defense and rebounding, which showed tonight with 27 rebounds and three 5-second calls. Everyone on the A and B team are very coachable and able to step up to the challenge.”
Anderson scored eight points, followed by Mazouch (6), Nachtigal (4), Johnson (4), Ringo (2) and Daniels (2). Dodge City’s Kirk scored 16 points.
GBMS B TEAM – Coach Stacey Magnett’s B team (1-2) jumped to a quick 4-3 lead in the first quarter with baskets by Ryann Stryker and Nathalia Gonzalez. A hard-fought defensive battle ensued with Damoniq Brown and Ashlynn Pio hitting free-throws in the fourth quarter and Gonzalez making two free throws. Dodge City escaped with a exciting 9-8 victory.
