DODGE CITY — The Great Bend Bat Cats broke a dubious record with their eighth consecutive loss — a hard-fought 3-1 Jayhawk League loss to the Dodge City A’s Tuesday. The Bat Cats (7-20 Jayhawk) are 0-8 in one-run Jayhawk League games.
The Bat Cats return home at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday for a doubleheader against the Fort Collins Foxes at Al Burns Memorial Field.
Great Bend’s McKay Banks singled home Thomas Alexander in the seventh inning, but was promptly picked off first base.
The Bat Cats nearly scored in two other innings. Brendan Madsen and Austin McNicholas singled in the sixth inning, but Gavin Johnson and Hunter Romero were retired. McNicholas and Gavin Johnson reached base in the eighth, but Romeo struck out with two out.
Bat Cat starter Easton Smith (1-4) and reliever Trey Boren limited the A’s to three runs. Dodge City’s Jordan Vukovich homered in the first inning and Daylan Nanny’s single scored Owen Jansen for a 2-0 lead. Former Bat Cat Seth Gerardy singled home Dayon Lock in the fourth inning.
