The Great Bend Boom baseball team officially hit rock bottom with a 8-5 loss to the Garden City Wind Tuesday to drop into last place in the Pecos League’s North Division. The Boom (13-22) are 7-20 after a surprising 6-2 start. Great Bend plays Wednesday at home and Thursday at Garden City.
WIND 8, BOOM 5
Beau Welborn homered and drove in three runs to lead the Garden City Wind past Great Bend 8-5 Tuesday at Clint Lightner Field. Austin Boyle (5-2) permitted four runs in eight innings with five strikeouts.
The game was tied 1-1 after five innings, but the Wind scored four runs in the sixth and three in the eighth.
Great Bend’s Clayton Truex homered and in the second inning. In the seventh, Matt Rembielak’s double scored Toni Hernandez. Tevin Padgett’s single scored Kedeem Octave. Darryl Baca’s single scored Rembielak. Right fielder Matt Consigli turned Logan Trowbridge’s fly ball into an inning-ending double play on Padgett.
Stephen Swagerty (1-3), yielded five runs.
WIND 10, BOOM 6
The Boom led 5-4 after five innings, but the bullpen yielded five runs in the sixth and seventh innings at Al Burns Field. The Wind’s top four batters — Joey Cecere, Eric Esquilin, Beau Welborn and Clay Ardeeser — all drove in four runs.
Tein Padgett singled, stole two bases and scored on a passed ball in the fourth inning. In the fifth, Reece Bell reached on an error and Dominique Lincoln walked. Clayton Truex’s double scored Bell and Lincoln. Tevin Padgett’s single scored Truex. Darryl Baca’s single scored Padgett.
