HAYS – The third time wasn't the charm as Hays-Thomas More Prep rallied past Great Bend 50-47 for fifth place in Saturday's Hays City Shootout.

The Monarchs (1-2) outscored the Panthers 11-3 in the fourth quarter after trailing 44-39. Great Bend's Alex Olivas capped a 21-point game with a tying 3-pointer for a 47-47 tie. Monarch Carson Jacobs broke the tie with a free throw and Ryan Karlin converted a score after a steal for a 50-47 lead. The Panthers' final chance to tie failed when Peyton Duvall's 3-pointer missed,

The Panthers committed four turnovers in their final six possessions. The Monarchs had five players score in the fourth quarter.

Olivas started on fire with a 14-point first quarter keyed by four 3-pointers. Dalton Miller added nine points. Brady Kreutzer led the Monarchs with 12 points and Karlin added 11 points.

The Panthers play Junction City in Tuesday's home opener.

MILLWOOD, OKLA. 58, GREAT BEND 48 (FRIDAY) – Oklahoma City Millwood outscored the Panthers 22-11 in the second period to qualify for the championship game.

Dalton Miller paced the Panthers with a career high 10 points and Alex Olivas converted a trio of 3-pointers. Sam Ryan and Brock Blessing each added eight points.

Millwood’s Isaiah Williams led the Falcons with 16 points. Justin Wilson added nine points. Millwood scored inside and outside featuring five players measuring 6-3 or taller.

The Panthers started on fire by converting their first three shots as Brock Blessing, Korbin Widiger and Sam Ryan knocked down shots for a 7-2 lead.

HAYS -- The Great Bend girls keep improving game-by-game. A victory was elusive with a hard-fought 53-50 loss to Hays-Thomas More Prep for fifth place in the Hays City Shootout.

Monarch Emily Schippers scored 20 points, eight in the fourth quarter. TMP outscored Great Bend 18-14 in the fourth quarter to pull out the victory.

Great Bend (0-3) was paced by Jaclynn Schroeder with 12 points and a trio of 3-pointers. Sydney Unruh continued to shine with 12 points and a pair of 3-pointers.

The Panthers play Junction City in Tuesday's home opener.

ST. THOMAS AQUINAS GIRLS 71, GREAT BEND 41 (FRIDAY) – Defending 5A girls state champion St. Thomas Aquinas dominated inside to roll past the Panthers.

Sydney Unruh played brilliantly with a career high 17 points, driving the ball fearlessly against the Saints’ height. Eleven Panther scored points.

Freshman 6-3 Beatrice Culliton dominated inside with 23 points and several blocks. Blythe Pearson (12) and Alayna Townsell (10) scored in double figures.
