Chiefs sweep Liberal tourney

LIBERAL — Great Bend pitchers Colin Hall and Alex Schremmer shut down Liberal 4-2 Sunday to capture the championship of the Liberal Legion baseball tournament. The Chiefs outscored four teams 42-4 to dominate the tournament.

Great Bend pitcher Colin Hall worked five innings and delivered a three-run double for the game-winning hit. Reliever Alex Schremmer pitched the final two innings.

In the first inning, Schremmer singled, Townshend Kurth walked and Carson Smith was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hall drilled a three-run double off losing pitcher Kevin Herrman.  

Liberal’s Kye Purdy tripled home Chance Duty in the second inning for a 3-1 score. 

Great Bend’s Layton Holden singled home Schremmer in the fifth inning for a 4-1 lead. Liberal’s Duty singled home Elian Preito in the seventh inning off Schremmer. 

The Chiefs permitted four runs in four games.

“Our pitchers did a good job throwing strikes and we played really good defense,” said Great Bend Chiefs coach Travis Kurth. “Colin got the big base hit for us. The guys had fun playing quality baseball.”

Christian Zahnter and Layton Holden both enjoyed strong debuts with the summer Legion baseball team.

“Christian Zahnter hit the baseball hard every time,” Kurth said. “Layton Holden had qualify at-bats every time. It’s nice to see those younger guys enjoy success.”

The Chiefs (6-0) are scheduled to play at 11:15 a.m. Friday against the Barn at the Barton Community College Tournament.

The Great Bend American Legion Chiefs rolled past Canon City, Colo. 11-1, Liberal junior varsity 10-1 and Liberal freshmen 8-0 at Saturday’s Liberal baseball tournament.

CHIEFS 11, CANON CITY 1 (G1) – Christian Zahnter was a one-man wrecking crew with a double, triple and five runs batted home. Pitcher Layton Holden struck out 10 batters in six innings.

Zahnter tripled home Carson Smith, Riley Smith and Nahum Olivas in a five-run fourth inning. Alex Schremmer tripled home Zahnter and Schremmer scored on Joey Soupiset’s groundout.

Schremmer tripled home Olivas and scored on a fifth-inning passed ball for a 7-1 lead.

Zahnter doubled in Carson Smith and Riley Smith in a four-run sixth inning. Schremmer doubled home Zahnter. Townshend Kurth doubled home Schremmer for an 11-1 lead.

CHIEFS 10, LIBERAL JV 1 (G2) – Kurth homered and drove in three runs. Soupiset pitched four innings for the victory.

Schremmer doubled home Riley Smith and Schremmer and Kurth scored on Soupiset’s groundball for a 3-0 lead. Kurth’s two-run second-inning homer scored Schremmer.

Zahnter scored on a hit-by-pitch and Layton Holden scored on Kurth’s grounder for a 7-1 lead. Carson Smith’s single scored Riley Smith and Schremmer. Zahnter singled home Colin Hall for a 10-1 lead.

CHIEFS 8, LIBERAL FRESHMEN 0 (G3) – Travis Kurth pitched two innings with two strikeouts and Jayce Kohls completed three innings with four strikeouts for a combined no-hitter against the Liberal freshmen. Carson Smith doubled and tripled and drove home two runs.

Schremmer scored on a first-inning wild pitch. Schremmer scored on Colin Hall’s groundout to start a three-run third inning. Carson Smith tripled home Hall. Joey Soupiset singled home Carson Smith.

A four-run fifth inning ended the game. Carson Smith doubled home Kurth. Soupiset singled in Smith. Nahum Olivas singled home Soupiset and Christian Zahnter for an 8-0 run-rule victory.
