Great Bend's Kaiden Esfeld shattered a 56-year-old 1,600-meter school record at Friday's Jack Bowman Track Invitational.
Esfeld (4:20.74) broke D. McLeland's time (4:20.9) in 1967 with the third-fastest 2023 time in Kansas. The 86-degree temperature and light southerly wind agreed with Esfeld, who ran one of the greatest races in his storied career.
Great Bend Panther Valarie Luna (5-6) barely missed breaking her own school high jump record, just missing clearing the bar at 5-7. Luna showed near perfect technique on two tries at 5-7.
"I want to be consistent, which is a good feeling. I jumped very well today," Luna said. "The warm weather helps. We practice here every day, so I'm used to this high jump pit. One of my legs was shaking, but I was able to overcome that. My 5-7 jumps were good. I just hit my bottom. If I get my hips up, I should clear it."
Great Bend's girls (100) outscored reigning 4A state champion Andale (94) for first place.
The Panthers and Hoisington Cardinals enjoyed plenty of highlights.
Great Bend's 3,200-meter relay (10:26.16) placed first with Eliana Beckham, Cassie Ellegood, Kate Welcher and Sienna Smith. Kyndall Blessing (131-1) won the girls javelin.
Hoisington's standout Josiah Ball cleared 14-6 in the pole vault for one of the state's best efforts. Ball (15.11) surprised Great Bend hurdler Madison Regehr (15.3) to capture the 110-meter hurdles.
Hoisington's Shellamae Farmer, the defending 3A state champion, cleared 11-0 to win the pole vault.
Great Bend avoided most of the heavy weather that struck Ellinwood and eastern Barton County. But lightning eventually stopped the meet.
