Great Bend Middle School runners Addy Nicholson and Kaiden Esfeld have captured back-to-back first place medals in the first two cross country meets.

The Great Bend girls scored a near perfect 11 points to edge Newton (13) by two points. 

Medalist Addy Nicholson (6:33.0) joined fourth-place Eliana Jackson (6:47.3) and sixth place Daizy Gomez (6:58.3) in the top 10. Clarissa Bashor (7:14.2) placed 12th and Brooklyn Ramsey (7:27.1) finished 15th.

Esfeld (11:29.4) captured the Prairie Hills cross country meet Tuesday, nearly a minute ahead of runner-up Asher Miller (12:28.9) of Ellinwood.  

Great Bend’s Haley McCormick (14:26.6) placed seventh in the girls 8th-grade division.

Great Bend coaches Mandy Charles and Tanner Dahlke have been training the team hard all summer and were excited to see their hard work pay off.

LAKE BARTON MEET — The Great Bend Middle School cross country team started their season with a first-place trophy. Aug. 30

The seventh-grade girls dominated the course finishing 1, 2, 3, and captured the first-place team trophy, featuring four runners in the top 10 and seven in the top 15. 

Great Bend's Nicholson (6:42.3) was followed closely by Eliana Jackson (6:45.4) and Clarissa Bashor (7:14.5). Daizy Gomez (7:34.5) placed seventh, Brooklyn Ramsey (7:53.4) 12th; Abi Miller (7:56.4) 13th and Teagan Mason (8:04.6) 15th.

Reagan Huslig (15:35.7) placed fifth in the 8th-grade 2 mile race. Haley McCormick (15;41.9) placed sixth Anna Campbell placed 22nd, Katria Kindscher 26th and Dennise Chavez 27th.  The girls finished in third place.

Esfeld carried on his undefeated streak he started last year winning the 2018 Great Bend cross country meet at Lake Barton.  Esfeld’s time (11:23) finished 1:26 ahead of runner-up Jose Lopez (12:49.4) of Dodge City Comanche.  Hoisington Middle School’s Deryl Yott (13:05.2) placed third.  

“I felt like everyone did their best today,” Esfeld said. “For me, I dedicate each race to someone and as I am running, I keep thinking about them and that is what pushes me to win.” 

Panther Edwin Chavez placed 24th, Jason Villarreal placed 28th, Moses Ramirez placed 40th followed by Brendyn Schroeder in 41st.  

Gustavo Alvarado (6:25.0) placed sixth in the boys 7th grade 1-mile race. Kaden Deines (6:43.4) finished 14th.
