Great Bend wins third consecutive title


HAYS — The Great Bend youth sixth-grade football team captured the Pride of Kansas Football League championship with a 15-0 victory over the Hays White Oilers. 

Great Bend finished the season with a 9-0 record. They ended a three-year Pride of Kansas football career with a stunning 27-0 record and three league championships.  Great Bend defeated Colby 40-0 and the Hays Blue Oilers 31-0 to qualify for the championship game.

“That group of kids worked hard the last three years,” said Rex Kern, Great Bend coach. “We were really estastic about the way the guys performed.”

During the regular season, Great Bend defeated the Hays White Oilers 19-0,  Ulysses 40-22, Burlington, Colo, 35-0, Phillipsburg 40-0, Republic County 45-0 and Pratt 27-0.

FIFTH GRADE — The Great Bend fifth-grade team finished 4-3 with a 33-18 loss to Beloit in the playoffs. Great Bend defeated Norton 42-6, Phillipsburg 26-0, Repuiblic County 28-6 and Russell 34-0. They lost to the Hays Oilers 32-6 and Burlington, Colo. 33-6. 

Fifth-grade team members are Trenton Rowe, Blake Stein, Gavyn Maddox, Kawika Martinez, Logan Jones, Maxx Steffan, Kylar Harbaugh, Jackson Tadlock, Logan Cossel, Slayde Apley, Josue Bustemonte, Corbyn Holinde, Caleb Mulligan, Hayden Liles, Tray Smith, Delton Thier, Kyler Ray.

THIRD-FOURTH GRADE — The Great Bend third-fourth grade team (6-2) lost 38-0 to the Ulysses Tigers in the league championship game. Great Bend defeated Larned 35-0 and the Hays Blue Oilers 21-0 to qualify for the championship game.

During the regular season, Great Bend lost 31-19 to Ulysses and defeated the Hays Blue Oilers 7-0, Burlington, Colo. 33-0, Phillipburg 32-0 and the Hays White Oilers 13-6.
