LARNED – The duo of Layton Haxton and Tony Moore were too much for the Larned Indians as they powered the Hoisington Cardinals to a 60-36 Central Kansas League victory. Moore poured in 21 points while Haxton backed him up with 18.

Hoisington (9-9, 4-3 CKL) is ranked as the No. 8 seed in the Russell substate.

Hoisington made 23 of 50 field goals for 46%. Hoisington play at Nickerson Friday.

The Cardinals broke open a tight game with a 13-7 second-quarter spurt to grab a halftime lead of 25-15 after leading 12-8 at the end of the first quarter. Hoping for a third quarter jump, Larned switched to a zone defense but Hoisington went on a 10-0 run to start the third quarter and the Cardinals powered their way to a seventeen point lead at 44-27 at the end of the third quarter. Moore and Haxton both had 10 points at halftime and continued their excellent shooting in the second half.

“Actually, our defense was pretty good but we didn’t rebound,” said Larned coach Luke Steinlage. “That gave Hoisington a lot of second chance opportunities. Hoisington got 18 more shots in the game. That goes to a lack of rebounding. Moore and Haxton got them off to a good start and we just never recovered.”

Larned made 13 of 32 field goal attempts for 40% and had 14 turnovers. Talon Reyolds made three 3-point baskets for 9 points. Cade Colglazier and Brady Hope each scored 7. Larned (5-13, 2-5 CKL) travel to Pratt Friday.
