HAYS – Great Bend’s girls knew the ability of Hugoton’s all-stater Mikyn Hamlin. Hugoton’s No. 2 scorer Summya Adigun proved too much to overcome. Hamlin scored 22 points and Adigun contributed 18 points to spark the 3A Eagles past Great Bend 58-39 in Friday’s Gerald Mitchell Hays Basketball Shootout.

The Panthers had trouble matching up with Hamlin, who converted her first seven field goals including four 3-pointers. Makenzie Premer closed out on Hamlin, who finally missed a field goal attempt. Adigun exploited the defensive gaps for six field goals and four free throws. Hugoton outscored the Panthers 24-3 on 3-pointers.

“Hamlin shot it over us,” said Great Bend coach Cindy Beck. “They’re good shooters. They had a lot of focus. They spent their 20-minute period before the ballgame shooting the ball. Vos shot a few when we weren’t on her.”

The Panthers (0-2) had their bright moments. Emilee Hall hustled inside for 10 points and Taryn Warren contributed eight points and two nifty assists. Melyne Fletchall hit her first career 3-pointer and scored a career high five points. The Panthers hustled for 13 offensive rebounds. The Panthers attacked the basket superbly, but missed an opportunity by converting 10 of 22 free throws.

“Emilee Hall enjoyed a solid start and Taryn Warren scored eight points. That’s something we have to get from them,” Beck said. “Those girls did nice of getting open inside. They took it to heart. We crashed the boards. We had girls coming after them on the boards. We learned some things and we improved as a team.”

The Panthers committed 25 turnovers, which the Eagles converted into easy transition baskets.
