The Kansas Wesleyan University softball team defeated Bethany College, 7-3, in the KCAC Softball Championship game to take home the title and receive a bid to the 35th Annual NAIA Softball World Series.
The Swedes won the first game, 7-1, forcing a second game to determine the champion but the Coyotes used 13 hits and seven RBIs to win game two. Kansas Wesleyan was led by Brooke Hawkins, who hit 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Kimberly Patterson went 2-for-3, adding two RBIs for the Coyotes. McKenzie Draper pitched all seven innings, recording one strikeout and no walks, while allowing three runs and six hits in the victory.
Kansas Wesleyan started the game off strong with a Stephanie Patterson single to right field, before Lauren Szoboscan hit a RBI double to deep center to put the Coyotes on the board in the first inning.
Reanna Guzman kept the hits going for Kansas Wesleyan in the second inning with a double to right-center, eventually scoring on a Brooke Hawkins two RBI double to right field. Patterson followed the trend, hitting a RBI double to left field to extend the lead, 3-0.
The Coyotes added three more runs in the third to make the lead 7-0, and the score would stand there until the bottom of the seventh inning. Bethany put runners on the corners on a Loren Stuive single, scoring two on a Mariana Cerenio-Jordan single up the middle to cut the lead, 7-2. The Swedes would get one more on the board on a Coyote error but it would not be enough as Kansas Wesleyan recorded its third out to take the championship title.
