LARNED — The Larned boys scored 14 consecutive first-quarter points and blew past Southwestern Heights 62-39 for their 15th victory of the season.
Chance Sanger increased his career scoring total to 1,030 points as he led all scorers with 30 points. Brock Skelton had 10 while Mason Perez and Andreus Tucker scored 9 apiece. Tucker also had 13 rebounds. Larned made 22 of 45 shots for 48% and converted 11 of 20 free throws.
Larned (15-5) plays Southeast of Saline (14-6) in Monday's 3A Halstead basketball substate.
“I'm happy that we got into a flow early,," said Larned coach Jerrod Smith said. "Chance Sanger was shooting well and all of our guys were terrific on defense. This sets us up well, going into our substate game Monday against Southeast of Saline.”
Larned raced to a 19-5 first quarter advantage and extended it to 34-18 at halftime behind the torrid 3-point shooting of Sanger. Perez closed out the first half scoring with a high-flying two-handed dunk off of a lob pass from Skelton.
Larned increased their lead to 49-27 after three quarters and cruised home for the victory. Larned forced 15 first half turnovers from the Mustangs and converted many of those into points.
Southwestern Heights (8-12) made 17 of 45 shots for 38%. Gabriel Arellano led the Mustangs with 13 points while Bryant Olvera added 11
