LARNED — In the opening seconds Larned’s Carson Shaver drilled a three pointer for a quick 3-0 lead and the Indians led the rest of the way in securing a Central Kansas League victory over Nickerson Tuesday, 49-35.

Larned jumped out to an 8-0 lead en route to a 12-7 first quarter lead and behind a Brady Hope 3-point shot at the halftime buzzer extended their lead to 24-18. Larned’s ball-control offense only took 15 shots in the first half but made 8 of them in taking the lead. Nickerson, meanwhile, could make only 6 of 23 shots to trail at halftime.

Larned had moved their lead into double figures in the third quarter but Nickerson closed out the third by scoring four points in the last twenty seconds to trail just 36-29 entering the fourth quarter.

“We did a nice job of being patient tonight," said Larned coach Luke Steinlage. "We ran our offense well. Even though we didn’t get the ball into the post where I thought we had an advantage, we did enough things right to get the win. We certainly played better tonight.”

Holding an 8 to 12 point lead in the fourth quarter, Larned ran clock and forced Nickerson to foul and the Indians were strong at the line. Larned made 15 of 22 free throws in the game. Nickerson was just 3 of 8 which provided much of the difference in the contest.

Nickerson (2-11, 1-2 CKL) was paced by Taylor Engelland’s 15 points. Kohen Starnes added five points.

Larned (5-9, 2-2 CKL) featured a balanced scoring attack with Carson Shaver leading with 13. Talon Reynolds scored 10, Brady Hope 8, Ty Smith 8 and Cade Colglazier 6.  Colglazier led the Indians with a strong rebounding effort. Larned will host Halstead Friday evening.
