Larned boys break out

PRATT – The Larned Boys came into Friday’s basketball game against Pratt-Skyline with one win and a handful of offensive woes.

That all changed as the Indians blew out the Thunderbirds 76-51 behind Cade Colglazier’s 26 points and the ball-hawking, aggressive play of guard Brady Hope, who scored 23 points.

Skyline jumped out to an 11-4 lead which caused Larned coach Luke Steinlage to take a timeout.

Larned rolled on a 13-2 run to knot the game at 13-13.

“I don’t know what was wrong,” said Larned coach Luke Steinlage. “We’ve started most of our games poorly as we did this one. We turned the ball over six of our first seven possessions. We told them to settle down and run the offense.”

Larned continued the assault in the second quarter as they outscored Skyline 19-9 as Colglazier poured in 17 points. Only the stellar play of senior guard Ryan Miller prevented a complete blowout as he totalled 15 first-half points.

Larned outscored the Thunderbirds 24-10 in the third quarter for 56-32 lead.

Larned made an incredible 18 of 21 field goal attempts in the second half as they, time after time, broke the Skyline press and attacked the rim for easy baskets. Skyline pressed defensively even though Larned scored numerous easy baskets.

“We played with great confidence tonight,” said Steinlage. “We’ve been timid offensively in games. If we play offensively with confidence, there are very few teams that we cannot compete with.”

Skyline (4-4) converted 15 of 46 field goal attempts for 32%. Ryan Miller scored 21 points and Brayden Berens added 12

Hot-shooting Larned (2-6) made 32 of 49 field goal attempts for 61% and converted 11 of 16 free throws. Ethan Lemuz added 10 points. Larned plays Lyons Tuesday.
