Larned softball splits pair


LARNED — The Larned Indians led 9-0 on the way to a opening softball victory over Smoky Valley. But the Vikings outscored Larned 17-4 for a 17-13 opening victory. Larned won the nightcap 14-5 to gain a split of Friday’s Central Kansas League twin bill.

Larned (4-6, 2-6 CKL) plays CKL leader Haven (5-3, 5-1 CKL) and Smoky Valley (3-7, 3-5 CKL) plays Lyons (5-3, 5-3 CKL) Tuesday.

SMOKY VALLEY 17, LARNED 13 (G1) — Smoky Valley’s Madi Tolle ignited a nine-run inning with a grand slam homer as the Vikings took advantage of 10 walks and nine Indian errors. Addison Haiden drove home three runs and Lindsey Gerlach and Liz Morgan drove home two runs.

Larned led 9-0 lead off starter Lauren Barnes.  Shaylee Martin singled home two runs and Ivory Muldrow tripled home two runs. Lynzi Myrick and Martin scored on an error for a 6-0 lead. Abby Towery’s two-run single and Kaylee Krehbiel added an RBI single for a 9-0 lead.

Haiden hit an RBI single in a four-run third inning keyed by a two-out error. Kira Haxton and Lindsey Gerlach delivered RBIs in a two-run fourth inning for a 9-6 score.

Baylea Perez singled home Julia Tapia for a 10-6 lead. Myrick, Towery and Nikki Taylor delivered RBIs for a 13-6 lead after five innings.

Tolle’s grand slam homer sparked a nine-run inning with three walks and two errors. Claire Broxterman, Haiden and Gerlach added RBIs for a 15-13 lead. The Vikings added two insurance runs.

LARNED 14, SMOKY VALLEY 5 (G2) — Larned pitcher Abby Towery earned the victory.

Alea Makings and Myrick doubled home runs in a two-run first inning.  Perez, Towery and Tapia drove home runs in a eight-run second inning for a 10-0 lead. 

Myrick and Martin drove home runs in a four-run third inning for a 14-0 lead. Gerlach and Haiden drove home runs in a five-run fifth inning.
