Nickerson softball breaks streak

HUTCHINSON — Larned’s seventh-inning rally ended one run shy as Nickerson’s softball team snapped a 47-game losing streak by surprising the Indians 10-6 and 11-10 in Tuesday’s Central Kansas League doubleheader at Fun Valley.

Larned (3-5, 1-5 CKL) plays Smoky Valley (2-6, 2-4 CKL) at home Friday. Nickerson (2-4, 2-4 CKL) won its first game since the Panthers beat Hesston 18-14 in 2016.

NICKERSON 10, LARNED 6 (G1) — Larned’s Lynzi Myrick doubled home Alea Makings and Kendra Grandy for a 2-0 lead.

Nickerson’s Brylee Engelland and Brooke Engelland delivered first-inning RBIs. Megan King drilled a two-run second-inning homer after Lanaya Hada doubled. Hada singled home Kaytlyn Daines for a 5-2 lead after three innings.

Myrick tripled home Baylea Perez and Makings after a pair of fifth-inning walks. Myrick scored the tying run for a 5-5 tie.

The Panthers scored five sixth-inning runs with two out off pitcher Nikki Taylor. Jayden Rehlander doubled home Korie Kaufman and Brylee Engelland after back-to-back walks. Brooke Engelland, Daines and Kylee Stucky followed with RBI hits for a 10-5 lead.

Kendra Grandy scored Larned’s sixth run on an error.

NICKERSON 11, LARNED 10 (G2) — Panther pitcher Cami Bass struck out Taylor to strand the tying runner on base after Larned’s five-run rally. Catcher Daines tagged Makings out at home on a throw by third baseman Megan King to preserve the one-run lead.

Kendra Grandy’s run was matched on a Cami Bass RBi single for a 1-1 tie. Stucky, Hada and King scored on second-inning errors for a 4-1 lead. Larned’s Shaylee Martin drove home Myrick in the third inning. Myrick stole home in the fifth inning for a 4-3 score.

Daines doubled home two runs and Korie Kaufman, Hada and King drove home runs for a 9-3 lead after five innings.

Myrick doubled home Abby Towery and Grandy for a 9-5 score. Brylee Engelland scored on an error and Brooke Engelland drove home Rehlander for an 11-5 lead after six frames.

Larned’s Kaylee Krehbiel, Ivory Muldrow, Makings and Martin drove home runs off reliever Bass. But Makings was thrown out at home and Taylor struck out to end the rally.
