HAYS – Larned's No. 5 ranked Dillen Hook (38-5, 126) achieved his championship goal with a 2-1 upset over Hoxie's No. 1 ranked Carson Ochs (36-5) for the 126-pound 3-1A state wrestling championship.
Hook advanced to the 3-1A championship by pinning Hill City's No. 3 ranked Carter Underhill (3:44). Hook downed Southeast Cherokee's Isaiah Castorena 16-1 and pinned Stockton's Emerson Lowry (4:00) to reach the semifinals. Hook placed third at regionals after losing to Marysville's Carter Trimble (4:28).
Hoisington's No. 4 ranked Eastin Redetzke avenged an earlier loss with a 9-5 fifth-place victory over Rawlins County's Ryan Sramek, who won the first meeting 5-3. Redetzke defeated Caney Valley's Brayden Harris (2:20); Lyons' Dominic Davis (2:25); Pleasant Ridge's Isaiah Kruse, 13-3. Republic County's A.J. Polansky defeated Redetzke, 5-4.
Hoisington's No. 2 ranked Josiah Ball (37-9, 126) encountered tough luck with a dislocated kneecap in a quarterfinal loss to Hoxie's Ochs. Ball was sidelined from the tournament.
Hoisington's No. 4 ranked Cole Gilliland placed fifth with a victory over Oskaloosa's Justin Miller (0:58). Gilliland defeated Chaparral's Carson Gates (2:18); Marysville's Garrison Craig, 4-1 and Rawlins County's Bearley (0:43). Hill City's No. 3 Thayn Walt dropped Gilliland (2:28) in the quarterfinals. Norton;s Corbin Puga downed Gilliland 4-0 in the consolation semifinals.. .
Halstead's No. 1 ranked Caleb Wise pinned Riley Philbern (2:29) in the 220-pound quarterfinals.
The Cardinals scored 43 points to place 14th. State champion Hoxie (186) finished 89 points ahead of runner-up Douglass.
