It was the biggest turnaround in team sports at Great Bend High School for 2012-13.
With first-year head coach Carrie Minton taking charge, the Lady Panthers’ basketball team improved on a 3-18 campaign from the previous season to 14-7.
Their memorable season included a second-place finish in the Western Athletic Conference 5-2, where they advanced to a Class 5A sub-state championship game, falling to host Salina South.
Just think. The Lady Panthers came one win from making it to the state tournament with all underclassmen. The upcoming season, Minton will be able to draw from a big senior class, along with some steady underclassmen.
Nearly the entire GBHS team members from this past season took part in a four-day basketball camp recently at Pittsburg State University.
The team camp was run by Pittsburg State head women’s coach Lane Lord, a former Barton Community College women’s head coach, who posted a 77-21 overall record in three seasons (2005-07) before leaving for Pittsburg.
In addition, the Lady Panthers are taking part in the BCC basketball summer league at Kirkman Activity Center, along with practicing and participating in the weight program at the Panther Athletic Center.
