PRATT — The Macksville Mustangs outscored the Skyline Thunderbirds 50-6 after halftime to roar back from a 30-0 halftime deficit in Eight-Man 1, District 5.
“We played that second half with a great deal of emotion and energy,” said Macksville coach Chet Skinner. “We went into halftime, settled down and came out and scored 50 the second half.”
Mustang quarterback Kody Mead was a one-man wrecking crew with four rushing touchdowns and three passing touchdowns. Darien Miller caught a 50-yard touchdown pass. Karson Waters caught two touchdown passes, including a 57-yard score. Mead has thrown for 1,190 yards and 23 touchdowns. Waters has scored 16 touchdowns with 702 yards receiving.
Miller intercepted a pass and Mead and Luis Fuentes recovered fumbles, one caused by Jonny Threlkeld.
Mustang Kaleb Lickiss collected 18 tackles and Hareley Blaske had 13 stops.
Skyline’s Braden Tyler scored four touchdowns and gained 186 yards.
“A tale of two halves is what comes to mind,” Skinner said. “We struggled to do basic foundations of football — blocking, tackling, making reads and completing passes. This victory helped us grab a spot in the new layout of the playoffs. We look to keep this momentum alive and play a good game against Central Plains.”
Macksville (4-2, 3-1 District) visits No. 1 Central Plains (7-0, 4-0 District) after the Oilers have posted five consecutive shutouts.
