Scoring was coming fast and furious Sunday afternoon at the Barton Gym. To the tune of 286 total points. That’s right 286. In the end it was the National team that came away with a 162-124 win at the fifth annual Central Kansas Boy’s High School All-Star Classic.
The National team opened up a close game with a 55-point fourth quarter for the easy win. Both teams got up more than 100 shots in the contest with each shooting more than 40 3-pointers.
The National team scored 99 points in the second half, finishing with that 55-point final period. The teams went to half in a close battle with the National team leading 63-61. But that lead stretched to 107-93 after the third then the 38-point final margin after a 55-31 fourth.
Zane Richter was the star for the winners, pacing the Nationals with 25 points on a perfect afternoon shooting. Richter, from the 2A state champion Jackson Heights, hit all eight of his shots from the field – seven of those 3-pointers. The first team all-state pick in 2A added a perfect 2-for-2 effort from the line.
Eric Harms of Abilene added 20 points on 9-of-10 shooting. Ryan Haskins (Osage City) added 19 as eight players reached double figures. Harms was second team all-state in 4A and Haskins first team in 3A.
Joining those three were Brendon Brenner (Ellis) with 16 and Tiylar Cotton (Wichita North) with 14. Josh Brady (Washburn Rural) and Tyler Zinn (Marion) each added 12 and Petyon Hoffman (Thomas More Prep) scored 10.
The National team had four local players help in the win. Larned’s Jordan Zimmerman added eight, Isaiah Perez six and Trevor Meyer five. Trey Ibarra of Great Bend also finished with five.
Central Plains’ Brady Rugan led the American team with 18 along with Noah Webster of Buhler. Another Central Plains’ standout, Braeden Crites scored 14. John Madden (Topeka High), Drake Spence (Maize), and TyCel Ibarra (Greeley County) each scored 11. Kameron Carey (Kinsley) finished with 10.
Other local standouts for the American team included two more Oilers from Central Plains. Michael Ryan, a first team all-state pick in 2A, scored six and Jacob Warken added two. Hoisington’s Steffan Dolochek finished with seven points and Eric Milton of St. John added three.
While the National team finished by hitting 22-of-49 from the 3-point line, the American team hit just 14-of-41.
