WICHITA – Great Bend Panther Paige Wagner built momentum with a 529 series that earned 15th medalist honors in Thursday’s 5A state bowling championship.

Wagner said she was nervous in her 147 first game. But she followed with 179 and 203 games. Wagner marked in nine of 10 frames in her 203 game.

“I would’ve liked to have played better. My scores were OK,” Wagner said. “We played OK as a team. We learned we need to relax. They are a few things that we all need to work on.”

Perry was pleased with the finish with five players returning next season.

“We bowled better as the day went along,’ Perry said. “It helps that the WAC plays Baker games all year. We overachieved this year. We got to this point a year ahead of schedule. This is a senior-laden tournament. Experience is valuable. I’m proud we finished in seventh place. We look for big things next year.”

Great Bend finished seventh (2,521) with series games of 662-598-618 and Baker games of 146-171-155-171.

Other Panthers who competed were 28th place Lexy Fox, 489 (223-132-134); 33rd place Sarah Mehlhaff, 476 (174-143-158); 73rd place Shanaeia Mehlhaff, 376 (112-142-122); 78th place Kristy Wittig, 364 (112-134-118) and 82nd place Nichole Griffin, 357 (118-122-117).

Buhler’s girls captured first place (2,889) followed by Wichita Northwest (2,828) and Topeka Seaman (2,826).

Wichita Carroll’s Kaylee Back earned medalist honors at 662 (162-256-244).
