BUHLER – Great Bend’s hard-working Panthers were finally rewarded for their work.

Great Bend shocked Buhler 53-46 to break a six-game losing streak in Tuesday’s non-league basketball game. The Panthers outscored the Crusaders 21-13 in the fourth quarter.

Point guard Alex Schremmer ignited the victory with superb ballhandling and 15 points. Hard-charging Dalton Miller closed it out with 15 points. Center Trent Stueder dominated inside with 11 points.

“We played together tonight,” Miller said. “It was great to earn a win. Everyone was trying to make something happen tonight.”

The Panthers converted 16 of 22 free throws, including 10 in the final quarter. Stueder, Miller, Schremmer and Alex Olivas knocked down fourth-quarter free throws.

“It was nice to see the guys rewarded,” said Great Bend coach Tim Brooks. “We played well on both ends of the floor.”

Peyton Duvall converted a 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter. Brock Blessing passed to Stueder for a basket and Schremmer dished to Miller for a fast-break score for a 43-34 lead.

“Down the stretch, we beat their pressure and it led to a couple easy baskets,” Brooks said. “I really liked the way we finished, especially at the free throw line. Buhler shoots the 3 so well, we needed all of them.”

The Crusaders (1-4) had beaten Hutchinson High, a 6A team the Panthers lost to last week. Buhler converted 7 of 28 shots from 3-point range and struggled to make shots against the Panthers’ shifting zone and man-to-man defenses.

Depending on the situation, the Panthers mixed and matched a variety of defensive schemes.

“We chased them off the 3-point line and recovered really well to contest their shots,” Brooks said. “They are capable 3-point shooters. We did an excellent job tonight.”

Buhler was paced by Carson Schoenhoff with 11 points and Isaac Leshore with nine points. Braden Sides hit both 3-pointers and scored eight points.
