JUNCTION CITY — Great Bend’s girls, the reigning 5A state runner-up, captured the Junction City Track Invitational with 152 points with Manhattan (116) placing runner-up.
The defending state champion 1,600-meter relay (4:14.79) placed first with Eliana Beckham, Makenzie Premer, Sadie Spray and Kara Feist. The 400-meter relay (53.14)placed runner-up with Valarie Luna, Feist, Spray and Premer. The 3,200-meter relay (10:57.70) with Cassie Ellegood, Kate Welcher, Beckwith and Beckham.
"The 4-by-4 we competed well. The 4-by-1 we didn't have the best 'sticks,' " said Great Bend coach Lyles Lashley. "The 4-by-8 we didn't finish as well as I'd like to see. We've got room for improvement."
Spray (5-2) edged teammate Luna (5-2) for first in the high jump.
"Those girls cleared jumping 5-2 in a 40-mile per hour wind was impressive," Lashley said.
Beckham won the 800 (2:35.29). Welcher placed third (2:45.40) and Ellegood fourth (2:46.24).
"They competed well. We weren't worried about times," Lashley said. "You never get back what you give away against the wind."
Kyndall Blessing won the javelin and Miya Nachtigal placed fifth (100-7). Blessing finished fifth in the shot (32-31/4).
Addy Nicholson placed third in the 1,600 (6:04.13) and placed third in the 3,200 (12:42.73).

"Madison's hard work has paid off," Lashley said. "Madison has a great day."
Oliver Dominguez won the triple jump (42-91/2).
"It was nice to see Dominguez win jumping into a cross-headwind," Lashley said. "It was impressive."
