Great Bend quarterback Koy Brack said the Panthers’ primary goal is to take what the defense gives them.
That being said, Brack welcomes the challenge when opposing defenses elect to play the Panthers’ receivers man-to-man.
Brack completed long-yardage pass plays to Alex Schremmer and Peyton Duvall in a high-profile 36-33 showdown against defending 5A state champion Wichita Carroll.
The Panthers converted similar plays in a 351-yard night against 5A powerhouse Wichita Northwest when Schremmer caught 77- and 84-yard scores and Dalton Miller scored on a 73-yard touchdown pass.
“On film, Carroll played man-to-man and that’s exactly what they did,” Brack said. “We tried to take advantage of that. Anytime, we have No. 2 (Alex Schremmer) or any of our receivers singled up, it’s nice. If we get one-on-one matchups, we’re going to take our shots.”
Brack threw for 320 yards — a 33-yard touchdown to Dalton Miller, a 60-yard strike to Peyton Duvall and a 66-yard score to Alex Schremmer, who has 26 catches for 561 yards and six touchdowns.
“Schrmmer and I are usually on the same page when I make my pre-snap read,” Brack said. “I’ll glance over there and we know we’re one-on-one.”
Brack depends on his offensive line of center Kaden Schroeder, guards Payton Doll and Marcus Schmeidler and tackles Tate Murray and Andrew Wettengel.
“It’s a team thing. Our offensive line has done a really very job shutting down some of the top defensive linemen in the state,” Brack said. “I couldn’t do any of this without my offensive line and my receivers. We like to establish a run game, but we’ll take what the defense gives us.”
The Panthers built a 33-21 lead before Carroll rallied for a 36-33 victory.
“It was definitely a fun football game to play in. We wish it would’ve turned out different.,” Brack said. “It felt like playoff football. You sense a different energy in the stadium. It’s nice to see that atmosphere before November.”
When Andover Central (2-3) visits Memorial Stadium Friday, the Panthers will seek improvement.
The Jaguars (2-3) have played five close games, beating Augusta 13-3 and Valley Center 27-17. The Jaguars lost 17-16 to Goddard in overtime, 21-20 to Maize South and 21-14 to Goddard Eisenhower.
“We need to keep playing better,” said Great Bend coach Erin Beck. “We need to bounce back and play good football on both sides of the football.”
The Panthers proved they could compete against Carroll, a high-qualify team with four state football titles.
“Our kids played extremely hard and extremely well,” Beck said. “They kids played their hearts out. We fought to the last whistle. We had guys making plays all over the field. We were disappointed we didn’t come away with a win. We need to close it out and win next time.”
