REGIONAL CHAMPS
Panthers roll past Cougars
BY JIM MISUNAS
SALINA – Great Bend’s Chiny Sanchez and Dani Franco are truly the Panthers’ dynamic duo.
Sanchez delivered a pair of perfect corner kicks and scored the clinching goal in the Panthers’ 3-1 victory over Salina South for a 5A regional soccer championship. Franco, the Panthers’ all-time leading scorer assisted on Sanchez’s goal with a perfect pass right before halftime.
The Panthers play at Maize South (15-3) Tuesday for their first 5A quarterfinal game since 2012 when they lost to Liberal. The teams have played three common opponents. Maize South beat Newton 3-1, Salina South 3-2 and lost to Salina Central 2-1. Great Bend beat Newton 4-1; Salina South 3-1 and split with Salina Central, winning 3-2 and losing 6-3.
Sanchez’s first corner was deflected to Junior Franco, who
scored against goalie Eduardo Picasco at the 31:10 mark. Sanchez’s perfect
floating corner kick was converted by Juan Sanchez at the 23-minute mark.
Sanchez signals to his teammates whether he’s passing for the front post or back post.
“I look for whoever is open,” Sanchez said. “I try to drive it just right, not too high or too low to get an easy header. We’ve been working on our set pieces. It really came through for us today.”
Great Bend coach Jesus Loera selected Sanchez for corner kicks to provide the Panthers with a taller attacker on set pieces.
“That’s something we threw it today to give us height in the middle,” Loera said. “Chiny did a great job placing them. We’ll probably stick with him.”
Franco supplied a nifty assist at the 13:10 mark to Sanchez’s blast for the clinching first-half goal. Salina South’s Leo Torres scored at the 14:08 mark for a 2-1 score.
“It’s great to see the chemistry has grown between Dani and Chiny,” Loera said.” It’s usually one of them with a score or an assist. They’re doing a phenomenal job working together.”
Sanchez said the Panthers achieved their goal of attacking offensively from the start.
“It’s really big to get a good start,” he said. “We’re playing really well as a team and getting into our rhythm. It’s defense and offense, everything.”
As Sanchez has caught fire, so have the Panthers.
“I’ve got my mind set right because it’s crunch time,” Sanchez said. “I’ve improved over the season. It’s natural working well with Dani.”
Loera believed the Panthers had great potential.
“I’m pleased,” Loera said. “These guys have worked hard. We played three tough games in four days.”
Great Bend (9-10) upset No. 1 West seed Salina Central (13-4) and Salina South (10-8) in back-to-back games.
