SALINA – Thanks to scoring sensations Dani Franco and Chiny Sanchez, the Great Bend Panther soccer team has officially shocked the world.

Franco scored two goals and Sanchez converted Tuesday’s game-winner to upset No. 1 5A seed Salina Central 3-2. The game was played in ideal 70-degree temperatures and 10 mph wind.

“This is our best team win,” said Great Bend coach Jesus Loera. “We’ve seen what these guys are capable of. When you beat a quality program like Salina Central, you’ve proven that your guys believe in themselves.”

The Panthers trailed 1-0 and 2-1, but kept battling with high intensity. David Grammer scored two Salina Central goals.

“We played with everything we had,” Loera said. “Our skilled players showed intensity and desire. Salina Central was expecting a tough game, but they never thought they’d lose.”

Franco scored both goals off breakaways in transition. He tied the score with a curving shot and passed to Sanchez with the game-winner with seven minutes left.

“We had to put the ball behind their defense and beat them with speed,” Loera said. “We play our best when we play the ball with our feet.”

The Panthers scored all three goals off transition.

“We knew we’d have a good opportunity to score if we put the ball behind their defenders,” Loera said.

The Mustangs (13-4) outscored the Panthers 6-3 in the season opener. So, the Mustangs started the Panthers’ season with a victory and the Panthers ended the Mustangs’ season.

The Panthers (8-10) return to Salina Stadium for a 6 p.m. second-round showdown against Salina South (10-7).
