Panther tennis wins Hays title

No. 2 singles places first


HAYS — Great Bend’s No. 2 singles Hayden Honomichl captured first place and the Panthers won a pair of tiebreakers to capture Tuesday’s Hays High Tennis Invitational on an 85-degree day. Great Bend scored 32 points to edge Abilene (29) for the team championship.

Honomichl (4-0) defeated Hays High’s Chris Goodale 8-3 for first place after surviving an 8-7 (7-1) tiebreaker against Abilene’s Jaylen West.

Great Bend’s No. 2 singles Matt Phillips (2-1) defeated Liberal’s Erick Rodriguez 8-1 for third place.

Great Bend’s No. 1 doubles Malachi Williams-Israel Esparza (2-1) downed Hays High’s Seth Shorb-Brandon Kennemer 8-5 for third place.

Great Bend’s No. 2 doubles Josh Hoisington-Luis Zamarripa (2-1) survived an 8-7 (10-8) tiebreaker over Salina Sacred Heart’s Kobe Douglas-Andrew Masher for third place.
