Panthers' earn two top 20 medals
AUGUSTA —Great Bend Panther Emilia Diaz (20:09.83) earned 15th medalist honors and regional champion Kaiden Esfeld (16:43.52) earned the 18th boys medal in the 5A state cross country championships at Four Mile Creek Resort.
The Great Bend girls (143) placed sixth with regional champion Maize South (58) edging Wichita Carroll (59) for the school's first state championship. Carroll's Hope Jackson (18:58.0) earned medalist honors.
The Panther girls return its state lineup with 30th Morgan Beckwith, 20:44.51; 39th Emma Loomis, 20:50.97; 42nd Addy Nicholson, 20:54.81; 54th Eliana Jackson, 21:18.46; 67th Haley McCormick, 21:44.23; and 93rd August Siefkes, 24:20.45.
St. Thomas Aquinas (32) defended the boys state championship with Lenexa St. James (77) placing runner-up. Wichita Kapaun Mt. Carmel's Erik Enriquez (15:43.9) captured medalist honors.
Great Bend's boys (261) finished 10th with 69th Matthew Huslig, 18:09.37; 70th Malachi Wasson, 18:11.53; 83rd Apollos Johnson, 18:47.62; 84th Brody Feist, 18:53.23; and 94th Brandon Suppes, 20:39.16 competing. Huslig is the team's lone senior.
