GARDEN CITY — Great Bend’s No. 1 doubles Abbie Moyers-Alexis Folkerts (3-1) led the WAC champions 3-2 before losing 8-3 and No. 2 singles Anna Popp (3-1) lost a three-way tiebreaker for first place at the Western Athletic Conference Tennis Tournament. Garden City’s Carson Linenberger-Sage Riggs swept six consecutive games to outlast Moyers-Folkerts, 8-3, on a perfect 70-degree autumn afternoon.
Popp upset Garden City’s No. 2 singles winner Erasay Alcantar 8-7 (7-5), but lost a tiebreaker on games won/lost. Alcantar (31-19) placed first, Liberal’s Priscilla Vasquez (28-23) and Popp (29-24) finished third.
Popp led Alcantar 4-1, before the Garden City player forced a tiebreaker at 7-7. Popp rallied for a 7-5 victory in the tiebreaker.
“Anna was awarded third place despite beating the girl who took first,” said Great Bend coach Joseph Bliven. “It’s frustrating how the numbers worked out.”
No. 1 singles Remi Ingram (1-3) placed fourth. No. 2 doubles Katherine Snapp-Audrey Muth (1-3) placed fourth.
“Everyone played well and got some victories,” Bliven said. “This was a good lead-up to regionals Saturday in Valley Center. Wer’re hopeful that we will make it to state this year.”
Great Bend competes at the Valley Center 5A tennis regional Saturday. The Panthers failed to qualify anyone from regionals last year.
Garden City scored 13 points to capture the WAC championship with Hays High (9) placing runner-up. Great Bend (8) edged Dodge City (7) for third place.
The other two division winners were Dodge City’s No. 1 singles Mariana Duque and Hays High’s No. 2 doubles Macey Speer-Trinity Quint. Garden City coach Rod Robinson was voted the WAC Coach of the Year.
