GARDEN CITY — Garden City's Ashleigh Chappel won two events and the Buffaloes captured the Western Athletic Conference girls swimming championship to end Great Bend's remarkable 17-year title streak. Garden City (413.5) won 10 events and runner-up Great Bend (369.5) won two events.

Great Bend's Ruth Williams tied Garden City's Mya Garcia for first place in the 100 butterfly (1:10.95) and Panther Emilee Hall won the 500 freestyle (6:04.7). All of the Panther swimmers and relays who placed first and second earned All-Western Athletic honors.

"Even though we did not get the outcome we had hoped for, I'm proud of every single one of the girls," said Great Bend coach Kari Carper. "We had 55 swims and 48 were personal-best times. We did not go down without a fight. This group of girls fought through adversity all season long between pool issues and injuries. They never gave up all season long."

Great Bend finished runner-up in all three relays  200 freestyle relay (1:50.79) with Zoe Jerke, Ellyson Somers, Aubrey Snapp and Hall; the 200 medley relay (2:10.94) with Reggie Huslig, Somers, Williams, Katelyn Mermis; and the 400 freestyle relay (4:09.78) with Hall, Williams, Jerke and Snapp.

Other All-WAC runner-up finishers were Jerke, 100 backstroke (1:11.84) and 200 freestyle (2:21.35); and Somers, 100 breaststroke (1:20.72).
