Macksville 68, Ness City 50

NESS CITY — The Macksville High School boys’ basketball team opened its 2010-11 season with a win over Ness City Friday night.
The Mustangs were led by Kyle Bunker, who amassed 30 points, 16 rebounds and two blocks while shooting 8 for 10 from the free-throw line.
Macksville will compete against Otis-Bison at 8 p.m. on Tuesday in the first round of the Larned tournament.

WILSON — The Otis-Bison boys’ basketball team fell behind 35-23 at halftime and never recovered.
The Cougars were led by Patrick Piper, who scored 12 points.
Otis-Bison will challenge Macksville in Larned on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

MINNEOLA — The Pawnee Heights boys’ came up short on Friday in its loss to Minneola.
Sam Spence drained two 3s for the Tigers.
Pawnee Heights will take on Hoisington at the Larned tournament on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

ELLINWOOD — In spite leading early, the Ellinwood boys’ basketball team couldn’t hold off the Russell attack for four quarters.
The Eagles were led by Kyle Corbett, who sank two 3s while scoring 13 for Ellinwood.
The Eagles will take on Wichita Northfield in the first round of the Ellinwood tournament on Tuesday night at 8.

Hoisington 62, Claflin 34

HOISINGTON — Ryan Bieberle led the charge for the Cardinals, scoring a game-high 19 points.
Benn Kirmer was the leading scorer for Claflin with 18 points.
The Cardinals defense held Claflin to only 10 points in the first half while its offense amassed a 38-10 lead.
Claflin travels to the Russell tournament on Tuesday while Hoisington goes to Larned to battle the Pawnee Heights Tigers.

Chase 51, Stafford 41

STAFFORD — The Stafford boys’ basketball team couldn’t come back after letting Chase get away from them in the third quarter in its season opener on Thursday.
The Trojans went into halftime knotted at 19, but a 20 point third quarter from Chase sealed Stafford’s fate.
The Trojans were led by Tanner Newell, who contributed 19 points.
The Trojans travel to Pratt Tuesday to contend with the rest of the field at the Skyline T-Bird Classic.

Macksville 52, Ness City 29

NESS CITY — Megan Wood pumped in 24 points in leading Macksville to a lopsided win over host Ness City Friday night.
Wood, one of four returning seniors for the Lady Mustangs, scored half of her point total in the first half, where Macksville clung to a 23-21 halftime lead.
Macksville broke the game open, when it outscored Ness City12-4 to take a 35-25 lead into the final eight minutes.

WILSON — The Otis-Bison girls dropped behind Wilson 16-8 in the first quarter and couldn’t bounce back.
The Lady Cougars were led in scoring by Hannah Bannister, who shot 4 for 5 from the line on her way to 21 points.
Otis-Bison is back in action on Tuesday night at the Larned pre-season tournament. The Lady Cougars will face Macksville at 6.

The Lady Tigers were led by Rachel Wasko, who scored nine points.
Pawnee Heights will travel to Larned on Tuesday to challenge Hoisington in the first round of the Larned early season tournament at 2 p.m.

The Lady Eagles were led in scoring by Lauren Thill, who scored 17 points.
Ellinwood hosts a tournament next week and the Lady Eagles are slated to play Tuesday.

HOISINGTON — The Claflin girls’ began its final season with a road win over Hoisington.
The Lady Wildcats were led in scoring by Courtney Liebl, who drained 7 of 8 free throws, a trey and a pair of deuces to give Claflin 14 points.
Hoisington relied on Mallory Flagor, who scored 13 for the Lady Cardinals.
Claflin goes on the road again Tuesday to the Russell tournament while Hoisington has a date with Pawnee Heights at 2 p.m. in Larned.
