LARNED — Despite pulling to within two points to end the first half, the Pawnee Heights High School girls’ basketball team fell to Hoisington 51-29 on Tuesday after being outscored 28-8 in the second half.
The outlook was bleak for the Pawnee Heights, which let the Lady Cardinals jump ahead of them 17-9 in the first quarter of their first-round game of the Larned Keady Basketball Classic.
“People have been playing us with a zone defense,” Lady Cardinals head coach Mandy Mason said. “We were trying to move the ball and get it inside to (Mallory) Flagor and (Britany) Axman.”
For the first quarter, that is exactly what they did. Flagor and Axman combined for 12 of the 17 points in the first period.
However, the Lady Tigers did not give up. Pawnee Heights doubled the Lady Cards’ point total in the second quarter to draw within 23-21 at halftime.Tristian Galliart produced a three-point play and Capree Worthey drained a 3-pointer to close the gap.
“They started the game playing us man-to-man,” Mason said. “They switched over to a zone defense and we struggled with that.”
Flagor, who finished the game with a game-high 16 points, continued to lead her team in the second half.
Jordin Greer, who finished with nine points, six of which came in the third, helped the Lady Cardinals build a lead.
The Lady Tigers were led by Rachel Wasko, who contributed eight points. She was kept scoreless in the second half.
“The biggest part was our defense in the second half,” Mason said. “When you play harder defensively, good things happen on offense.”
