WICHITA — Great Bend High School underclassmen throwers Jayce Brack and Nick Warren took a trip to the podium during Friday’s competition of the Class 6-1A state track and field championships at Cessna Stadium.
If all goes well, both should be back again next year, too.
For Brack, a sophomore, he appears destined to be a four-time state qualifier — when it’s all said and done.
On Friday, Brack finished fifth and Warren, a junior, captured sixth in the 5A discus competition.
“It wasn’t the best day, but it’s better than last year,” said Brack, making his second-straight state appearance. “I wish I could’ve done better. I still have next year.”
Brack’s fifth-place throw went 155 feet, nine inches, which the two-event state qualifer said he was content with. He competed in the shot put on Saturday.
Warren, a junior, making his first state appearance, wound up trailing Brack by five inches with a discus throw spanning 155-4.
“It’s different than all of the other meets, that’s for sure,” Warren said. “You have so many more people watch you. You just kind of got to roll with it and kind of make something out of it.”
As it turns out, Warren is 5A’s most-improved thrower from a year ago when he was toiling in obscurity
“I did improve a lot this year, by about 20 feet I improved,” Warren said. “It could still be a lot better.
“I got one more year, a year to get better.”
Great Bend head coach Bo Black lauded his talented duo.
“They both came out and competed well in the finals,” Black said. “They were in a talented field. Being underclassmen, they competed very well.”
Willie Morrison of Leavenworth won the event with a massive heave of 166-5. Morrison edged Sharp by a foot (165-5).
