Cardinal softball splits twin bill

HESSTON — Hoisington’s softball team rallied to force extra innings, but Hesston edged the Cardinals 5-4 on Kayla Wade’s game-winning hit. Hoisington won Tuesday’s Central Kansas League softball opener 15-4. The Cardinals (10-6) are tied with Larned (10-6) for the top seed in the 4A Hoisington softball regional.

HOISINGTON 15, HESSTON 4 (G1) — Hoisington delivered up and down the lineup as leadoff batter Bailee Bachar drove home three runs and Brooke Bachar, Aurora Ingram, Jenna Urban and Brooke Steinert each drove in two runs in a eight-hit attack. The Cardinals benefited from 17 walks.
Hoisington pitcher Taylor Boxberger struck out seven Hesston batters.
Urban and Steinert delivered RBI hits in a four-run first inning. Bailee Bachar’s two-run single keyed a three-run third inning.
Ingram drilled a two-run single and Brooke Bachar hit a sacrifice fly in a three-run fifth inning. A pair of bases-loaded walks handed the Cardinals two sixth-inning runs. Steinert and Boxberger delievered RBIs in the seventh inning.
HESSTON 5, HOISINGTON 4 (G2) — Wade singled home Wright after a leadoff walk for the game-winner.

The Cardinals threatened in the eighth inning, but Wade retired Boxberger and Wolf. Boxberger preserved a 4-4 tie when she retired Schilling with the bases loaded in the seventh inning.
Brooke Bachar’s triple scored Riley Brungardt with the tying run, but she was thrown out by Hesston first baseman Rylie Schilling in the seventh inning.
Hesston led 1-0 when Wade singled home Kemp after a third-inning single. Hoisington’s Cailee Zink scored on a groundout for a 1-1 tie after four innings.
Hoisington’s Brungardt and Aurora Ingram delivered RBI singles for a 3-1 lead. Hesston’s Kailey Ince hit an RBI single and Elizabeth Lumberas drilled a two-run single for a 4-3 lead after five innings.
