Cardinals big plays beat Larned, 56-27

LARNED—The Hoisington Cardinals amassed 478 yards of total offense on 45 plays as they raced by the Larned Indians here tonight, 56-27, averaging just over 10 yards per play.
On the first play after taking the opening kickoff, Larned surprised Hoisington with a pass off of a double reverse as Damontay Phillips hit an all-alone Dalton Bright for 74 yards and a touchdown. The extra-point kick was good by David Valadez and the Indians had a 7-0 lead after only 16 seconds had ticked off.
Hoisington answered quickly and with 9:08 remaining in the first quarter Hunter Hanzlick powered in from the one-yard line. The conversion kick by Ingo Barrena Carpio was good and the game was tied 7-7.
With 2:41 remaining in the first, quarterback Tyler Specht slipped into the end zone from 5 yards out and the Cardinals had regained control, 14-7. With 7:55 left in the second quarter Hanzlick again scored from the 4 yard line and following another conversion kick, Hoisington had a 21-7 lead.
Larned wasn’t finished with their tricks though as only ten seconds later Jonathan Herter lofted a deep pass to a streaking Dalton Bright that was good for a 60 yard touchdown. The kick was blocked but Larned had crawled to within 21-13.
Hoisington would then go on to score two quick touchdowns before halftime, one a 6 yard run by Sean Urban and with only 17 seconds left Urban gathered in a 12 yard pass from Tyler Specht and rambled into the end zone for a 35-13 halftime lead.
Following a short punt by Larned in the third quarter, Hoisington took over on the Larned 28 yard line and on the next play Hunter Hanzlick rambled to the end zone and the lead ballooned to 42-13.
Larned fought back and on a fourth and seven, Kolby Keith ran 14 yards for a touchdown. A two-point conversion run failed and the score stood at 42-19. Hoisington quickly answered and with only 57 seconds left in the third quarter Sean Urban bolted in from the 4 yard line . The kick was good and Hoisington had a 49-19 led.
With 10:55 left in the fourth quarter Urban would again find the end zone, this time on a 44 yard burst up the middle as the Cardinals increased their lead to 56-19. With 3:57 left in the ball game Larned’s Anthony McConnell twisted, turned and broke loose for a 21-yard touchdown and then also ran the ball for a two point conversion as Larned posted their 27th point, providing the final margin of 56-27
Hoisington maintained their season-long average of just over 9 yards per play as they racked up 433 yards rushing and 45 passing. They were led by Sean Urban’s 12 carries for 173 yards. Hunter Hanzlick chipped in with 14 carries and 133 yards and Cameron Davis had 9 rushes for 88 yards.
Larned posted 202 yards rushing on 43 carries and completed 4 out of 12 passes for 156 yards. The Indians were led by Kolby Keith’s 13 carries for 66 yards, Shevon Martin’s 10 carries for 46 yards and Jonathan Herter with 11 rushes for 36 yards.
Hoisington improves to 2-0 in District play, 8-0 overall. They will travel to Lyons for a Thursday night District game.
Larned falls to 1-1 in District play, 1-7 overall and will travel to Ellsworth for a key District game on Thursday evening. The winner of that game will join Hoisington in advancing in the playoffs.
