OSBORNE — The Hoisington High School wrestling team finished in second place at the Osborne tournament on Saturday.
The Cardinals were led by sophomore Brandon Ball (120), senior Matt Manka (152), junior Chris Crawford (170), junior Cayton Janousek (195) and senior Cody Batt (220), who took first place in their respective weight classes.
“The kids wrestled really well for an season opening tournament,” Hoisington head coach Dan Schmidt said. “We wrestled in some really good weight classes, and we beat some kids that beat us last year.”
Hoisington had 11 wrestlers place in the tournament, earning it 166 points. Phillipsburg, which won the tournament with a score of 190, also had 11 wrestlers finish in the top four.
Schmidt said his team pulled through in several close matches, and that he was impressed with their ability to remain strong in overtime matches.
“I think our conditioning, as a team, exceeded our expectations this weekend,” Schmidt said. “We won quite a few overtime matches. Not only won, but pinned in overtime. If we had a tough match, and we were getting deep in it, it seemed like we were conditioned better than the other team.”
Zach Sanders (138) and Peyton Bullard (182) both took second place in their weight classes.
Chance Demel (145) and Brady Moore (285) finished in third place in their weight classes, and   Landon Harmon (106) and Dylan Bell (160) took fourth place in their weight class.
