LARNED — After the first quarter, it looked as though the Hoisington High School boys’ basketball team was going to give the crowd a repeat performance of its quarterfinal game against Pawnee Heights, in which the Cardinals dropped the Tigers 86-16.
The Cardinals cruised past the Kinsley Coyotes, 66-30, in the boys’ championship game of the Larned Keady Basketball Classic.
It is the second time in school history that the Hoisington boys have won the Larned Keady Classic. The last time the Cardinals have finished on top was 2007.
Both teams began the game slow. Kinsley committed three quick turnovers forced by Hoisington’s full-court defense. Hoisington couldn’t sink a shot on any possession given to them by the turnovers.
After a minute and a half to settle down, the flood gates opened and Hoisington began to pour it in.
In a brilliant display of rapid-fire offense and full-court pressure on defense, the Cardinals scored eight points in only 38 seconds thanks to a 3-pointer by Brady Demel and a three-point play converted by Luke Becker.
Derrick Kaiser, who was voted as the most valuable player for the boys’ all-tournament team, added 10 to the Cardinals’ tally to give Hoisington a 29-6 lead.
Hoisington continued to dominate in the second quarter, scoring another 19 while only giving up nine to Kinsley.
The Cardinals took a 48-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The slowed the game down in the third quarter, bringing in players off of the bench to get playing time. Every player on the Cardinals’ roster saw playing time against Kinsley.
Hoisington also eased up on the full-court defense.
Kaiser, who finished the game with a game-high 28 points, led the charge once again in the third period, scoring another nine points, all but two scored in the third quarter for the Cardinals. He also hit 90 percent from the line to lead his team.
Cody Stetler, who was voted to the all-tournament team, also finished in double digits with 11 points for Hoisington.
