ELLSWORTH — The Hoisington High School wrestling team blew away a young Ellsworth team 61-9 in a dual on Thursday night.
“It was one of those nights where we faced an inexperienced team in Ellsworth, which has some good up-and-coming talent,” Hoisington head coach Dan Schmidt said. “They’re just so young. They’re going to have a real nice team down the road.
“We had some kids that were seniors and juniors. We were able to take advantage of our experience.”
The Cardinals were only able to match up with the Bearcats in seven weight classes.
“It’s just a numbers thing,” Schmidt said. “They had eight kids, but one of them ended up being sick.”
Schmidt said that Chance Demel (145), who beat Mo Rojas, had a good match.
“Demel wrestled really well today,” Schmidt said. “He wrestled a good kid who had some success last year as a freshman. He’s just a sophomore, but he’s pretty good.”
Senior Cody Batt (220) had the quickest match, winning by fall after 13 seconds against Zach Gustus.
“All of our kids who got on the mat wrestled really well,” Schmidt said. “There are some kids that I just expect to do well, and they were true to form. Zach Sanders did well. Matt Manka won by fall in the first period. Dylan Bell won by fall early in the second period. Cody Batt won by fall after only 13 seconds.”
Sanders (138) beat Zach Martin.
Manka (152) bested Cory Herrison.
The Cardinals are back in action on Friday, Dec. 16, when they host the Cardinal Corner Classic.
The classic boasts nine teams, including Great Bend.
“There will be nine teams there, so it should be some great competition,” Schmidt said. “Great Bend brings a very good team, so every round there’s someone from Barton County wrestling."
