Cardinals lose baseball doubleheader

NICKERSON — Nickerson’s five-run fifth inning rallied the Panthers to a Central Kansas League baseball doubleheader sweep over Hoisington 10-4 and 7-4 April 20.
Nickerson (9-1) maintains first place in the CKL and Hoisington (6-4) drops into a three-way tie for third place. Larned (6-6) visits Hoisington Tuesday. Great Bend (5-1) travels to Nickerson April 28.
PANTHERS 10, CARDINALS 4 — Nickerson broke the game open with eight runs in the first two innings off pitcher Kyle Lang and reliever Derek Boxberger.
The Cardinals led 1-0 when Alex Schremmer singled, stole second base and scored on an error. The Panthers scored four runs in the first inning. Tanner Schrag and Kaleb Jackson and Josh Salazar singled home Schrag. Braden Stewart walked. Jackson scored on Austin Engelland’s groundout. Chander’s RBI single scored Salazar and Carson Crandall’s single scored Stewart.
Nickerson added four runs in the second inning. Engelland drove in a run and two runs scored on an error. Engelland scored on a sacrifice fly by Carson Cornelius.
The Cardinals scored three third-inning runs off starter Austin Engelland. Schremmer and Lang singled. Schremmer scored on an error. Breit’s single drove home Lang. Myles Menges’ sacrifice fly scored Hanzlick.
Kolbi Schrag’s single drove home after Jackson and Salazar reached on a single and error in a two-run fifth inning.
PANTHERS 7, CARDINALS 4 — Nickerson’s five-run fifth inning spoiled a solid start for Cardinal pitcher Braxton Donovan. The Cardinals led 4-2 after 41/2 innings.
Stewart’s single drove home Tanner Schrag in the first inning. Stewart’s groundball scored Jackson in the third inning for a 2-0 lead.
Menges’ single scored Jeremy Breit in the fourth inning. Braxton Donovan’s two-RBI single scored Breit and Schlochtermier after Hanzlick scored on Menges’ groundball.
The Panthers scored five times in the fifth inning. Tanner Schrag and Jackson singled and Salazar was hit by a pitch. Kolbi Schrag’s RBI single scored Tanner Schrag. Jackson scored on Stewart’s groundout. Salazar scored on a wild pitch. Eaton’s RBI drove home Stewart. Eaton scored on a groundball for a 7-4 lead.
