ELLINWOOD — With all of its starters back on the field, the Hoisington High School football a looked shaky at times.
In spite of eight fumbles, five lost, the Cardinals beat Ellinwood 42-0 on Friday night in Ellinwood.
“Maybe it’s my idea of liking the (Oakland) Raiders or something,” Hoisington head coach Jason Ingram said of his team’s fumbles. “I don’t know. We need to control the penalties and control the ball. We kind of hurt ourselves with that all game.
“Early in the game, the fumbles hurt us. We got covered at halftime. We made sure that we were aware that football wasn’t going to change, and we need to do a better job of holding it.”
Ellinwood (1-2) saw some success in its first drive handing the ball to Patrick Ringering. However, Ringering got injured in the first quarter, spending the rest of the first half on the sideline and not returning for the second half.
“They are thinking that he might have some cracked ribs,” Ellinwood head coach Dusty Beam said. “That would be a huge hit. You saw it. Our speed disappeared with Patrick Ringering. It showed. When you shut down the inside and you can’t run our criss-cross and our pitches with Patrick, it takes a hit.
“When your fastest kid on your team is hurt, it takes the wind out of your sail.”
Without Ringering, who had 25 yards on two carries before his injury, Ellinwood began handing the ball to Marcus Brown and Allen Templeton, who took turns running between the tackles.
The Cardinals (2-1) did a good job shutting down the middle running lanes, preventing the Eagles from capitalizing on the five Hoisington turnovers, and holding Brown and Templeton to 69 yards combined.
“I would describe my team as Jekyll and Hyde,” Beam said. “One week, we are Dr. Jekyll, and we are, you know, go with the things. If things go bad, we just let it go. One game, we’re Mr. Hyde and we just go nuts.
“We’ve got to go back and right the ship. I don’t even know how to explain it. We came out flatter than pancakes tonight.”
Hoisington propelled itself onto the scoreboard with a safety recorded by Trevor Williams.
The safety was set up by the second lost fumble, the first coming on the first play after the kickoff.
Cardinals fullback Cody Batt fumbled the ball one yard from the goal line.
After the safety, the Cardinals drove the ball 31 yards, capped by an 18-yard run by Hagan Hanzlick to score, putting Hoisington up 9-0. Hanzlick ran for 184 yards to lead the Cardinals.
“Hagan Hanzlick is doing a marvelous job,” Ingram said. “His work ethic. His motivation out there. His desire to want to win. His desire to just want to pound that ball and do anything he can to be successful is amazing.”
Quarterback Derrick Kaiser scored 12 more points for the Cardinals before the half. He threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Brooks Linsner and ran for a 1-yard dive.
Hoisington, which started the first half with a fumble, started the second half with a 69-yard kickoff return by Cody Richter.
Austin Stout and Batt each ran for a touchdown as well, going for four yards and five yards, respectively.
