Cardinals split softball twin bill

HALSTEAD — Hoisington pitcher Delaney Smith earned the victory in relief and sparked a game-winning rally with a three-run homer to help the Cardinals salvage a split with Halstead 17-12. Halstead won Thursday’s softball opener 7-6. The Cardinals (6-7) play Hesston at home Tuesday.
HALSTEAD 7, HOISINGTON 6 — Halstead survived the Cardinals’ rally after leading 7-3.
Ingram’s sacrifice fly scoed Brooke Bachar in the first inning. Ingram scored on a passed ball and Bailee Bachar’s RBI single scored a run in the third inning. Brooke Bachar scored on a fifth-inning error. Kat Warnken’s scored Trinity Dolezel in the sixth. Smith’s RBI single drove home Bailee Bachar in the seventh, but Werner retired Dolezel for the final out.
HOISINGTON 17, HALSTEAD 12 — Smith struck out two batters to preserve a 12-12 tie after relieving starter Sydney Boxberger. The Cardinals scored five runs in the seventh inning. Maddie Wilborn scored on a fielder’s choice on Aurora Ingram’s groundball. Smith’s home run scored pinch runner Bailee Bachar and Ingram for a 16-12 lead. Kenzie Wolf’s single drove home Boxberger for a 17-12 lead.
Smith finished with five hits and five RBIs. Wilborn, Brooke Bachar and Ingram each drove in two runs. Boxberger had two doubles and Ingram and Trinity Dolezel also delivered doubles.
