HOISINGTON — The Hoisington High School Cardinals finished the regular season 14-0 in wrestling duals, closing it with a quadrangular on Thursday evening.
The Cardinals beat Marion, 69-3; Hillsboro, 61-9; and Smoky Valley, 39-29.
“We were really excited about what the kids did,” Hoisington head coach Dan Schmidt said. “They were focused. It was senior night, and we had some seniors come up with some big wins for us.”
Hoisington, which is ranked No. 2 in Class 3-1A in the latest Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association poll, recognized 11 seniors, including nine wrestlers and two managers.
“We have a great group of seniors,” Schmidt said. “We had nine who were wrestling, and we had a few others that ended up not coming out or quitting just because they got buried on the roster. They still hung out and helped us throughout the season, though. To have 12 kids in one class that have so much impact on our team is incredible.
“We’re talking about a group of seniors who have only lost two duals in their four-year career.”
Those two losses came at the hands of Smoky Valley in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.
Hoisington put an end to that, getting a win in the 285-pound weight class to secure a victory over the Vikings.
“Darwin Brickley is one of our seniors, and he probably had the best night of all the seniors,” Schmidt said of his heavyweight. “He went 3-0 tonight, and he was the one that put the nail down in the Smoky Valley dual.”
Hoisington cruised past Marion and Hillsboro, getting 11 pins out of the 18 matches.
Hoisington’s Brandon Ball, a state champion last season in the 120-pound weight class, had a pair of pins to close out his regular season, competing at 126.
“I’ve wrestled pretty good,” said Ball, who is ranked No. 1 in his weight class. “I’ve had some hard matches. (Great Bend’s Chris) Burley was pretty hard. I feel like I’m where I want to be.
“Our team’s been pretty good. We’ve had a few injuries, but we’re doing good.”
No. 2-ranked Chance Demel (145) had two pins and a major decision.
Cayton Janousek (220), who is ranked No. 2 in his weight class, only had one match, pinning No. 4-ranked Evan Slater of 3-1A Marion.
Demel and Janousek were both among the seniors recognized on Thursday night.
Hoisington competes at a 3-1A regional on Friday, Feb. 15, at Garden Plain, starting at 2 p.m.
