CPHS girls cruise past Colgan
Central Plains Oilers

MANHATTAN — Reagan Phelan jump started Central Plains on a 22-2 burst and the Oilers coasted past Pittsburg Colgan 48-24 Wednesday in the Class 2A state basketball tournament. The Oilers’ speed and quickness overwhelmed the Panthers.
Phelan filled the boxscore with seven points, seven assists, four steals and three blocks. Taylor Rolfs scored 12 points to go with 11 rebounds and three blocks. Janae Ryan and Cassidy Crites each chipped in 11 points.
“We share the ball so well,” said Pat Stiles, Central Plains coach. “Whoever is open will get the open shot. We average three players in double figures and five players who can score on any given night. It makes it tough to guard.”
Central Plains (24-0) has won 16 consecutive post-season games over the past three seasons. Colgan finished with a 14-10 record. The Oilers will play in the 2A semifinals against Hill City (22-2) at 3 p.m. Friday.
The two-time defending Class 2A state champions held the Panthers to 18 percent shooting and forced 14 turnovers.
The Oilers dominated the first period for a 15-2 lead and started the second quarter with back-to-back baskets by Rolfs sandwiched around a pair of Crites baskets for a 22-2 lead. The Panthers shot 14 percent the first half.
“It’s so important to be focused. You’ve got to get off to a good start — otherwise you go home,” said Stiles. “That’s exactly the way you want to start. If you’ve been here before you realize if you dont get it done, you’re going home. We played really good defense. We locked them out for a couple minutes.”
