The Ellinwood Eagles Boys team won their first sub-state tournament game versus Ell-Saline on Monday with a final score of 59-37. It was a back and forth game in the first half with neither team really finding momentum. Ellinwood held just a one-point lead going into the half at 20-19. However, out of halftime the Eagles cranked up the full court pressure and exploded in the third quarter. Ellinwood won the 3rd quarter 22 to 4 and pushed out the lead for good. Eagle scorers were lead by Senior Marc Waite who poured in 16 points. Waite hit the boards hard all night recording 12 of the teams 23 total rebounds to notch a double double. Junior Theron Sjogren had his best scoring game of the season and dropped in 14 while also dishing out 5 assists. Tyson Martinez and Gavin Vink both added 8 points. Vink had the tough job of guarding Ell-Saline standout Brandon Clark, who was limited in scoring.
The next game will be held at Central Plains on Thursday night against the winner of Lincoln and Canton-Galva.
