ELLINWOOD — The No. 2 ranked Ellinwood girls shocked No. 1 ranked Central Plains 66-58 Tuesday to capture a share of the Central Prairie League championship. The victory snapped a 45-game winning streak for the Oilers, last year’s Class 2A state basketball champion.
The Eagles (19-1, 7-1 CPL) captured the top seed in next week’s Central Plains substate ahead of the Oilers (19-1, 7-1 CPL). The Oilers beat Ellinwood 60-44 in last year’s substate championship en route to the Class 2A state championship..
Ellinwood all-stater Rachel Doll scored a game high 20 points and delivered clutch offensive plays all night with eight rebounds, solid ballhandling and four assists. Ellinwood’s Delaney Beckwith dominated inside with 14 points.
Allison Panning scored 11 points, grabbed eight rebounds and handed the Eagles a 30-27 halftime lead with a 3-pointer. The Eagles dominated the third quarter 18-10 for a 48-37 lead after three quarters. The Eagles shot 54 percent on 25 of 46 field goals.
The Eagles got valuable help from their role players as Tawny Arndt iced the ballgame with three free throws. Blake Wilt contributed nine points, four assists and eight rebounds. Wilt and Arndt scored rebound baskets in the third period.
Regan Phelan scored 22 points and Taylor Rolfs added 15 points for the Oilers.

CENTRAL PLAINS BOYS 52, ELLINWOOD 21
ELLINWOOD — No. 3 ranked Class 2A Central Plains roared past Ellinwood 52-21 in a Central Prairie League basketball game. The Oilers led 27-2 after one quarter.
Michael Ryan led the Oilers with 23 points. The Oilers led 46-16 after three quarters, triggering a running clock in the fourth quarter. Braeden Crites finished with 11 points and nine boards for the Oilers.
Central Plains (17-3, 7-1 CPL) wrapped up second place in the league and secured the No. 1 seed in the Class 2A Claflin substate next week. The Oilers play Smith Center (6-13) at home Monday.
Leading Ellinwood scorer Marc Waite and Nathan Monday each scored four points. No. 2 seeded Ellinwood (12-8, 5-3 CPL) plays Ell-Saline (8-11) Monday at home in the Claflin substate.
