Ellinwood Middle School boys win CPL title

The Ellinwood Eagles Middle School boys basketball team captured the Central Prairie League basketball title with a 33-31 victory over the Ness City Eagles. Team members are Tyler Stuhlsatz, Shaun Weber, Devan Komarek, Cooper Bailey, Britton Dutton, Devin Krabble, Alex Elmore, Colby Heinz, Cody Zink, Cale Batchman, Logan Bauer, Trey Scholfield, Dallas Charles, Darian Haynes and Koy Behnke.

MACKSVILLE — The Ellinwood Eagles Middle School boys basketball team captured the Central Prairie League basketball title with a 33-31 victory over the Ness City Eagles.
A wide open Darian Haynes converted the game-winning layup on a pass by Tyler Stuhlsatz with 0.7 seconds remaining. Ness City missed a desperation heave to end the game.
Stuhlsatz and Britton Dutton scored 10 points apiece. Haynes added eight points, Cale Batchman three and Cody Zink two. Ellinwood is coached by Justin Joiner, Matt Behnke and Tyson Martinez. Koy Behnke was the other Eagle who played significant minutes.
Ness City jumped out to a quick 8-4 lead in the first quarter, but Ellinwood finished the quarter strong. Stuhlsatz hit a 28-foot 3-pointer as the first quarter buzzer sounded for a 14-12 lead.
Stuhlsatz ended the second quarter with a long 3-pt buzzer-beater for a 20-12 halftime lead. Ness City stormed back for a 24-22 score after three quarters.
Ness City led 29-28. Dutton’s free throw tied it 29-29. Ness City led 31-29 when Dutton’s pass fed Stuhlsatz for a tying layup with 1:14 left. Ness City failed to score after a minute of possession time.
Ellinwood (13-3) defeated St. John in the semifinals and Macksville in the first round. Ellinwood tied Ness City with a 7-1 record in CPL play. The Eagles finished with an eight-game winning streak.
“The boys played their hearts out,” said Ellinwood coach Justin Joiner said. “They were a great group of boys to coach. I’m excited to watch all these boys continue to improve and do well as they get older.”
